Trekking in the peruvian Andes

In November 2013 I guided a travel through some of South America most impressive landscapes. From Lima we went to Cusco, from where we left for Salkantay trek. After 6 days walking in high altitude we reached the lost city of Machu Picchu. Other highlights of this trip were La Paz, Lago Titicaca and Salar de Uyuni.

Chulilla - rock climbing in Spain

After summer season for mountaineering ended in the Alpes, I enjoyed two weeks of rock climbing in the backyard of Valencia. Just 60 km north of Valencia airport is Chulilla, an old climbing spot. In the last few years lots of new routes have been opened and potential seems to be endless. The climbing varies from crimpy to tufa routes and from vertical to overhanging. What they have in common is their length, often up to 40 m. I will definitely come back!

Winter ended

After two years of looking for powder snow around the globe “my winter” ended. In 2013 I experienced my first European summer since three years and was enjoying everything what summer brings: swimming in the Lake of Lucerne, mountaineering in the Swiss Alps and lot of rock climbing in Europe! It was great, but I am already looking forward to ski again.

In the heart of the Haute Route

Beginning of April 2013 we spent a week ski touring around Arolla. Arolla is situated on the Haute Route from Zermatt to Chamonix. Here at the heart of the Haute Route we just went off the beaten track from the Haute Route and we did some nice ski touring where we met not more than a handful other skiers!

Freeride touring above Lake of Lucerne

If you don’t mind to walk a bit, your probability to find good powder snow is rising significantly. There are some small ski areas within a 30 minutes drive from Engelberg or a 40 minutes drive from Andermatt where you can ski up to 1000 vertical meters long slopes. These amazing runs are often just a 1 hour walk away from the lifts away. In February 2013 clients from Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and England joined me to ski in these calm areas. They were more than happy!

Heliskiing Central Switzerland

Middle of February 2013 we took advantage from the good snow and weather conditions and spent a day heliskiing in the Urner Alpen, just northeast of Andermatt. The first run went from the top of Hüfi glacier down to Linthal, where the chopper was waiting to bring us back in only a few minutes to Planura hut - 3000m above sea level. From there we skied in perfect powder snow 2000 vertical meters down to Uri.

Where are the off-piste skiers?

February 2013 was cold with several snow dumps in the valley of Engelberg. So it was obvious that snow conditions were great all over the valley. In February I often skied outside Engelberg. The reason was not that Engelberg was not great. The reason was only that other areas were even better: almost no off-piste skiers, steep tree and pillow runs and hip deep powder for days!

Scott Mission WOW, St. Christoph am Arlberg

For January 20th I had the pleasure to join the Scott Women Freeride Days hold in St. Christoph am Arlberg, Austria. More than 20 participants joined the event to discover the sheer unlimited freeride and backcountry terrain at Arlberg. Our group went for a ski touring trip, starting in the ski area of Stuben. At the end we skied back through Maroital towards St. Anton.

Avalanche Safety Training, Andermatt Valley

End of December and beginning of January 2013 I was guiding in the Valley of Andermatt. The client’s aim of these multiday trips were to get an introduction in the sports of ski touring with the main focus in avalanche safety training and theory. We did a lot of ski touring, avalanche safety trainings, snow pits and practical field exercises. The hotel Tiefenbach gave us the right frame: Situated 2100m above sea level, it offers great ski touring opportunities as Chli Bielenhorn or Klein Furkahorn, hotel comfort, good food and class rooms. The access from Andermatt to the hotel and its superb skiing terrain is just a 2h walk.
