Big dumps have hit the eastern Alps in early January 2019. So it was definitely time to visit Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, Austria. In Montafon you find several ski areas as Schruns, Bella Nova or Gargellen (famous for the Madrisa Rundtour, where you ski into Switzerland).
We arrived after two sunny days, so it was clear that all off-piste runs close to the lifts where completely skied out. These powder days are really busy in Montafon, as nowadays elsewhere in the Alps. But the reason why we came here were not these easy accessible runs. The reason is that you are almost alone, once everything is skied. So if you don’t mind walking a bit, you will find long runs with hardly any tracks.
